Open the Door to Audio Books

As a young mother, the only time that I could read was when I put the children down for a nap, or at night after I had put the children to bed. Of course, that was only if the house was clean, the laundry was done, folded, put away, and the baking was done for another week. Usually by that time, I would be so exhausted that two consecutive words in a book would put me sound asleep. In those days, I would hunger to just escape, for a few hours at a time, to some exotic place with exciting people who could speak “grown up” sentences. What I needed to do most, was the one thing that would create havoc in my life. To “steal” away some time for myself, would result in being behind and having to work harder and faster to catch up. I was forced to spend time in the here and now rather than escape. I remember that one of the special events in my life would be when my spouse was available to extract time out of his busy work schedule to spend with the children and allow me a few hours of “Mommy time”.

Out would come the book, (often Erma Bombeck and her sarcastic wit), and I would lay in the hammock on a hot summers day and read and laugh until I had tears running down my face. How much more simple my life seemed when I compared it to the erratic lifestyle of that household. By the time that I had to face reality and get back to parenting, I usually felt rested, relieved and ready for whatever challenge came my way.

Today’s technology allows for all of that to be changed around. Today, young mothers can listen to audio books of every genre while cleaning house and raising their young. No longer does it require “snatching” time from other things in order to read. Why, students can even complete required reading while hiking, running, or even working (in some instances). I am an avid “reader” of audio books, and find that I am getting through even more books a week than my normal three or four.

If the reader is good, and makes the book seem visual, I find that when it is completed, I feel like I have watched a movie. I am now listening to audio books while walking and exercising as well. How much better can it get than this? There used to be a time when we dreamed of having it all. Maybe you can after all.

Review _ A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners (Keith Folse)

Keith Folse’s A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners is an aptly-named resource for teachers who seek to become more comfortable assessing the English-language skills of students for whom English is a second or other language. Every activity and test is presented in such a way that it can easily be implemented in the classroom; the theory presented is a supplement to, rather than a replacement of, practical instruction. Coombe, Folse, and Hubley emphasize the following criteria for developing effective assessments when working with ESOL students: usefulness, validity, reliability, practicality, washback, authenticity, transparency, and security.

A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners is divided into ten chapters, which are logically arranged and organized in a way that teachers will appreciate both for the quality of the content and the ease with which information can be accessed. Separate chapters are devoted to assessing students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. Depending on what a teacher needs at any given time, he or she may find that only one or two of these chapters will serve the purpose at hand. Indeed, each chapter could stand alone as a useful resource for teachers who seek information on assessment of specific language skills, or the techniques described therein can be combined if that is what is called for. This contributes to the flexibility of A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners, which teachers can adapt for their own purposes to best suit the courses they are teaching and the students they seek to help.

Placement testing, including the commonly-used tests TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment), is covered in A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners, as are test-taking strategies for students preparing for such examinations. At the end of each chapter is a list of “Ten Things to Remember,” which is very helpful for reiterating and summarizing key points. For teachers who are looking for information quickly, this is a handy tool to find answers to pressing questions, more detailed explanations of which can of course be located within the preceding chapter.

Using A Practical Guide to Assessing English Language Learners, teachers can develop strategies for both creating and using effective evaluative tools. As promised by the title, it is written with a straightforward, no-nonsense style that includes insightful observations and useful tests and activities that can easily be used in the classroom.

Review Hammond World Almanac 2006 World Atlas

Publisher: Hammond World Atlas CorporationISBN: 0843709375

The Hammond World Atlas Corporation has teamed up with the bestselling World Almanac and Book of Facts in putting together a superb and educational publication, Hammond World Almanac 2006 World Atlas.

You can probably call this Almanac the bible for world class cartography and data with its 200 pages of facts and figures about people, ethnic groups, languages, religions, area, capital, GDP, head of state, and governments. And then there are the 100 pages of digital TerraScape Maps that feature three dimensional relief of land and ocean floor terrain.

When I looked at the “Contents” section of the Almanac, I was delighted to see that there is a section pertaining to the interpretation of maps. How often have you looked at a map and you haven’t a clue as to what all the symbols mean or the map scales and projections?

In clear and precise language the authors of this publication explain what are map projections and explore some of the most widely used projections. They also introduce us to a new projection, the Hammond Optimal Conformal.

For those of us who are unfamiliar with the term map projection, we are informed that the challenge faced by mapmakers is to project the earth’s curved surface onto a flat plane. Consequently, to accomplish this feat, cartographers have developed map projections or formulas that govern this conversion of geographic data. It is possible to identify every point on earth with the help of a geographic coordinate grid, and this grid is projected onto a flat surface.

From this starting point we are given explanations of general principles and terms, how to flatten a sphere, selected examples of projections, conic projection and the Hammond Optimal Conformal.

This initial section is followed with a comprehensive explanation as to how to use the map section. It is here where we find out how boundaries are determined, sources of names, map symbols, colors, labels and map scales.

Armed with all this introductory data we are now prepared to examine the world maps starting with the Europe and Northern Asia and then Asia, Australia and Pacific, Africa, Antarctica, South America, and North America. On the bottom of each map there are color codes differentiating the population of the various cities and towns. There is also a mileage scale denoted in either miles or kilometers. Detailed and comparative thematic maps, tables, graphs pertaining to each continent, topography, population, land use, mineral resources and consumption are also included.

The concluding section or the World Almanac Section presents key facts and figures concerning every nation such as their rankings by population and area, major oceans, ocean depths, and islands, rivers, waterfalls, continental altitudes, lakes, reservoirs, dams, highest mountains, temperatures, top languages, precipitation, population growth, energy and environment.

Examining facts and figures about a particular nation we notice that what is included is the following: topography, capital city, independence date, type of government, who is the head of state and head of government, GDP, industries, chief crops, minerals, life expectancy at birth, literacy rate and a link to the country’s web site.

This almanac is a magnificent achievement to be savored and repeatedly enjoyed. It fills an educational niche and is a perfect addition for libraries, classrooms, and personal book collections, where vital geographical data is at your finger tips.

Vision for Utopia Review

The vision of paradise on earth has been expressed by prophet and poet alike throughout human history. Unfortunately this wonderland where people live in harmony, and each citizen has a role to play in the development of a heavenly community, has never been actualized (or even intimated) by any nation on earth. In his work entitled Vision for Utopia, author Melchizedek presents a colorful picture of a world free of want, violence, and greed; and, in the process, articulates his own personal plan to make this dream a reality.

The story takes place in the year 2021. At this time “the world has become one under the international guidance of Ophiram,” a Charity Foundation that has achieved sovereign influence through the implementation of founder John J. Elias’ political and economic theories. “It is a World where every person, every Company and every Country is now thriving in a climate of co-operation.” In an attempt to understand how the Ophiram philosophy has managed to reshape the political reality of civilization, reporters Simon Tyne and Sarah Carey make a trip to the World Unity Tower–Ophiram’s colossal headquarters–to interview Mr. Elias.

Within the course of the novel these two inquisitive journalists are taken on an extensive tour of the entire Ophiram Foundation: a multi-faceted enterprise spanning the globe and comprised of countless interrelated agencies. As they travel the world and get an inside look–and a detailed description–of the company’s infrastructure, they begin to grasp, and stand in awe, of the inner workings of the Ophiram Corporation. With projects ranging from commercial spaceflight, to curing diseases, to improving the human diet, to the construction of aesthetically perfect architectural structures; and departments dealing with every imaginable global issue, there appears to be no limit to the size and scope of the Ophiram operation.

The word Ophiram is taken from the Biblical book of Isaiah where the prophet states: “I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” True to Isaiah’s prophecy, the author creates a world where mortals are indeed considered more valuable than mere commodities or money. Through the Ophiram initiative, world citizens are no longer forced to live a humiliating, sub-standard existence dominated by the masters of industry, who value their own personal wealth above human life–and claim the ‘lion’s share’ of this earth’s resources for themselves–while the vast majority of people made in God’s image perish in impoverishment. The author’s noble intention, and the artistic way he presents his intricate (and yet philosophically profound) worldview, are well worth consideration.

In addition to crafting a linear storyline wherein he couches his political philosophy, the author uses the novel to showcase his exquisite artwork. The elaborate designs and Scripture verses embellishing ‘the new world’ currency are beyond beautiful. Even if one doubts the viability of actualizing the author’s thoughtful spiritual-political-economic theories–due to human greed which negates the possibility of achieving unified goals–Vision for Utopia is a true work of art.

The Liberator Written By Alex Kershaw

I have always been interested in WWII books that tell the true story of so many of our military exploits from that war. I think this book by Alex Kershaw is told better than any book I have read on the subject. He knows how to write about his subject by using words and phrases that make the reader thoroughly understand what they are reading and finds the story getting better as it goes. The European zone in which our gallant military fought contains so much information told in a great way. Felix Sparks was born and raised in Miami, Arizona, an area that suffered the ravages of the great depression as much as the rest of the nation. Felix hunted, ran traps, and got food any way he could. When he wasn’t hunting he was studying. His military training started in the Citizens Military Training Program where he learned how to march and drill in very high heat environment. He wanted to go to college and he loved the military-anything that was military. He ventured away from the area and found himself being asked by an army recruiter if he wanted to join the army. He figured “why not” and joined, a decision that forged his life forever.

Felix Sparks, now married with a baby, prepared to shove off on a troop transport that ended up in Europe prepared as well as possible for fighting a war. While on the ship General George Patton announced that from that point and time they would be a part of the 7th United States Army and they were going ashore to attack Sicily, Italy in small troop transport boats. None of the men knew what they were in for. Sparks was a part of the National Guard Thunderbirds, all green recruits. The book describes several of the generals associated with army leading and planning duties, Patton, Marshall, Eisenhower, Mark Clark, and others and how they made their battle plans, some with and some without arguments. Sparks at this time had no idea he would move up in the ranks to eventually become a general too, and that was far from his mind at this time. He just wanted to defeat the Germans and Italians. The many battles he and his group fought were tough and brutal while killing and wounding many men. Their drives would advance one day and lose ground the next. The Germans were tough while the Italians were not since they were not sure if they were staying in this war or not. The Thunderbirds along with the rest of their groups moved up the boot of Italy towards Rome. The Germans fought back for every inch of ground in Italy with both sides killing and wounding thousands of men along the way. New raw recruits kept coming up the pipeline adjusting to war as they had never imagined it to be.

The description of the battles is beyond imagination. The men would dig a small foxhole if none was available, they would jump into any hole large enough to cover as much of them as possible. The sounds of shells coming from both the enemy and their own units as they sailed over their heads or landed very close to them was such a caustic and nerve wracking and body shaking experience. To have a man sharing a foxhole one minute and killed the next is incomprehensible to those that were never in battle. Sometimes friendly fire fell short of its mark and hit our own men. When they tried to advance, they had to carry such huge heavy packs on their backs containing survival gear as well as ammunition, grenades, shovels, military packed food including good old Spam that was a real war ration. When the chance came to take a break, they would move away to a nearby town and relax as much as possible with wine, women, and song. They danced, they had sex even though they were all pre-warned about the disease that was so prevalent in the entire area due to the women being both lonely with most of their men at war, and the demands the German soldiers made of the women.

Sometimes the men would find some great caches of wine and they really enjoyed that. But the many grievous losses of men from so many battles were so enormous that it was hard to wrap their minds around that and keep going. Blood flowing from wounded and/or killed men on both sides were everywhere. Some of the rivers and canals flowed red. As the men went through towns that they were taking back from the Germans, the citizens went wild with chants of thanks and food and drink coming out of the cellars and caves. All through this time, Sparks led his troops while taking battlefield rank promotions. His men loved him because he cared about them and would be there with them as much as possible. As they progressed through Italy and into France and Germany, they came to one of the concentration camps, Dachau, where they found the most disturbing sights they had seen during the entire war. The description of bodies just thrown on top of other bodies, the ovens that still had some in them that had been burned, the piles of clothes that the prisoners had to dispose of, and so much more that makes the reader gets chills. One of the last battles of this group was the march to Hitler’s own compound but by the time they had gotten there Hitler had committed suicide.

I know this review is long but to write telling less doesn’t give the reader a real idea of what all is contained in this super book. You must read it. You will get an idea of what the foot soldier went through during WWII. How the ones that survived made it through mentally is beyond my imagination. Praise to these men for their help in giving us the freedoms we take for granted. Believe me, they are not free-freedoms.

3 Months to Your First 5K A Book About Honest Marathon Training

There’s not lots of training books that take on exact lengths of running events, such as full marathons, half marathons, 10K, and many others. Frequently, every one of these varieties of marathon running is compacted inside a singular handbook. You’ll find merely a couple of authors that commit a full publication to some very specific area in marathon running. That is why you will be slightly impressed by this instructional book this article is going to be critiquing.

The book is entitled “3 Months to Your First 5K” and with the label only, you can note that it’s definitely centering on a solitary subject, and that is 5K distance running. Furthermore, in the name itself, you’re provided a specific course regarding precisely how you are going to deal with the courses: for three months you’ll rigorously work out to show up at your very first ever 5K marathon running event. With the front cover itself it entices even the most focused couch potato to start out training since it gives tangible information about how it would be done.

Dave Kuehls, the author of this book, will act as your individual coach for the entire three months of your exercising. Within the guide he emphasizes that beginners will reap the benefits of this handbook greater than others given that his training schedules have been designed with the rookie runner in mind. He starts with speaking about the actual benefits of training, and not simply the cookie-cutter form of gains, but the important, appropriate explanations of just how your system will change after three months of education. Concerning the physiological benefits, he also provides just a little insight in this: how your own self esteem could be raised to newer levels, how you can boost your motivation plus more.

Common training suggestions are offered in “3 Months to Your First 5K”, just like the correct clothing, the right foods to eat, the way to accommodate your current way of living to marathon running. More to the point, it sets out whatever you need to do throughout the particular day of the contest in full clarity, an item that few guides do, as they definitely feel like the education is enough. It also gives you the promises of a future immediately after the 5K, for those who like to run extended matches.

Nevertheless, the guide fails to deliver with its training schedules because they are unfit for the newbie. Whilst it delivers to the novice the correct mindset for joining a 5K jogging event, the training is only good for experienced joggers as opposed to the completely inexperienced ones. For instance, for the 1st day you’re recommended to walk half a mile, and then run half a mile, and then walk half a mile, that’s genuinely physically demanding for the starter’s very first day. If you think maybe you’ll be able to complete this routine from the very beginning, “3 Months to Your First 5K” would be great for you.

5 Ways to Not Get the Part

In this article, I will look at 5 ways to send your next potential stage manager over the edge at the audition. Don’t want to get the part? Then do these 5 things and you surely will have no problem getting cut for a random “type out.” And by random “type out,” I mean intentionally cut by the casting director at the earliest possible moment that won’t make it seem like they were rushing to get rid of you! Hah!

1) Put no effort or thought into your resume, and I mean absolutely no stinking thought at all! When a stage manager glances over your resume, he or she is getting a first impression of you. Don’t ruin the impression because you hand wrote your special skills in the margin or forgot to change the name of the person you copied the resume from!

2) Audition for something that you don’t want. Guess what?! Not wanting it shows clearly, even on the best liar’s face. Stage managers don’t want their time wasted just as much as you don’t want yours wasted! If you don’t want it, don’t audition.

3) Come to an audition that you know you can’t fill the requirements for! “Hey, even though the breakdown explicitly indicates ’10 pull-ups required at the audition,’ I’m going to go even though I can’t.” Or… “I know this is an audition for a tap solo, but maybe they will look past the fact that I don’t tap and hire me for my jazz skill.” No… No… No. Again, refer to the second bullet point, don’t waste their time!

4) Don’t follow simple directions. Doing a backflip when they asked to see a back roll doesn’t impress anyone. It just shows you SUCK at following directions and should NOT be hired.

5) Use your phone at the audition. In fact, why not just talk on your phone in the waiting room, text when they are speaking to the group, and let the phone ring when the stage manager is calling your number. They really love that! I don’t believe any extra explanation is necessary here. Don’t use your phone AT ALL!

And there you go… 5 ways to not get the part… OR, really piss off your direct boss for your next year contract. Good luck with that!

*All 5 ways to throw your stage manager over the edge were collected from actual stage managers. You wouldn’t believe the stories they had!

The Mayflowers Grueling Voyage Offers Hope To Unfree Peoples Everywhere

Like so many Africans who speak and write English, I have had a fascination since my early childhood in Senegal with the founding of the United States of America. More particularly, I continue to want to understand the characters and personalities of those human beings who created a nation where freedom has survived, indeed flourished, for nearly half a millennium now. What is the magic formula? And how can I adapt that magic formula to my homeland and my own continent of Africa?

That is one of the reasons the idea of America is so important around the world. Because so many Africans, Asians, South Americans, and others, like me, see in the USA a role model for constructing democratic institutions. We know the USA is far from perfect, but it is so much better than many of the alternatives we are forced to live with every day! Though you will hear complaints about American policy, no one really doubts this basic truth. We take hope from the knowledge that there is with us now in the 21st century a working example that it can be done. That mankind is not doomed to live in totalitarian or corrupt regimes forever.

So this was the “intellectual baggage,” if you will, that I brought to Kevin Jackson’s The Mayflower: A Voyage from Hell, his harrowing account of the grueling sea voyage of that flimsy wooden vessel, which had once been used to haul French wine to the English seacoast, that carried a 152 English pilgrims and their crew, including a defiant core group of Separatists, far across the stormy Atlantic Ocean to New England in 1620. This event will soon be four centuries ago. Surely there will be celebration in 2020?

For starters, I had not realized how tiny this “ship” was. The Mayflower was rated at 180 tons — meaning it had a damp, dark, dank interior hold that could accommodate 180 casks of French wine each weighing one ton — and she was about 100 feet in length. So you have 152 cranky, sick, squabbling people in an area not larger than a tennis court, usually immersed in total darkness, in a bowl-shaped ship that bounced around the sea like a basketball.

On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower sailed from Plymouth with what one of the Pilgrims called “a prosperous wind.” They were stuck on that tiny boat for 82 days of torture, vomiting, bad food, and close quarters until the Mayflower set anchor and an exploring party left the ship on November 27, 1620, a Monday, to search for a settlement site in what we know today as Cape Cod’s Provincetown Harbor. There were two deaths at sea, but this was only a precursor to what happened after their arrival on Cape Cod, where almost half the company would die in the first winter.

So what does an African woman like me take away from this story in the 21st century? First, the ghastly conditions of the voyage. Freedom is not free, and freedom is unlikely to be achieved by people who are not willing to put their lives and their futures on the line in just the way the Pilgrims did. And there is the risk, too, of failure and total loss.

Second, I was stunned by the amount of religious squabbling that went on during the voyage. The Pilgrims’ desire to leave England had a great deal to do with escaping the tyranny of a what in my country we call “sharia law” — that is the imposition on secular life of a law that is supposedly divinely handed down. It is painful to think that four centuries after Mayflower, there are still efforts by governments all over the world to impose religious law in secular circumstances. It did not work in 1620, and it does not work today.

It is comforting to me also that the passengers of the Mayflower were deeply flawed human representatives of their era, if also brilliant idealists who were willing to take major risks. Two groups set out, the Saincts (Saints) and the Strangers. And the colonists were very, very concerned about making money! So these people were not super-humans at all. They were people like you and like me, and therefore it is possible for me to imagine a modern Mayflower that will bring freedom to an African country.

This short Kindle Single gives an abbreviated account of the complex politics and economics behind the launching of the ship. Perhaps Jackson could have taken more time to expand on these. More to the point, Jackson describes conditions on board that were more far more horrific than I had understood them to be. Too many of my fellow Africans expect democracy and freedom to be handed to them on a plate with a nice golden spoon. And they look at the riches of America today and they think “it was always this way.” No, it was not. There were struggles in America before there was freedom and prosperity.

This book is only a snapshot of a critical chapter in the annals of freedom. I wish it had been a bit more “in depth” Jackson’s account of the Mayflower’s grueling passage recounts the horrors faced by the pilgrims. He sheds facts from myth. I hope that Africans everywhere will spend more time thinking about the difficulties in achieving democracy than simply considering the pleasure of enjoying its benefits. This is a balanced, though too short book that many will enjoy.

What Is Spiritual Awakening

At its most basic level, everything is energy. This includes people, thoughts, colors, rocks, plants, space, light… everything. Many people have called the Universe a “vibrational universe.”

Where do “you” begin and end, and where does anything around you begin and end? There is no boundary to energy. What we perceive is concentrations of energy with unique vibrational patterns. This makes things appear solid and separate from one another.

Spiritual awakening goes beyond the “obvious” of separateness and embraces the true nature of everything, which is unity. Spiritual awakening doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with “finding God” in the religious sense. It can also be viewed as realization of one’s own energetic quality.

Shrinking and Growing Exercise

It often begins with a simple exercise like this “Shrinking and Growing Exercise.”

Imagine you are sitting in a country house, enjoying the afternoon sunshine, hearing the birds singing. You have a lovely view of your surroundings. Imagine the far-reaching and the intimate views. In your mind, take in every detail. See the space between the trees. Smell the scent of individual flowers. See each cloud as it floats across the sky.

Now, make yourself smaller. Image you shrink down to the size of a bee. Suddenly the house has become colossal. Everything is HUGE. Delicate rosebuds are much bigger than you. The cat is an enormous beast and you feel uncomfortable as the object of its interest. The spaces between things are much larger. Without wings, the journey from the front porch to the street is an epic journey. Take in the details around you. Imagine a teacup – now the size of a small swimming pool…

You shrink even more. You are now the size of a dust mite. The world has completely transformed. You don’t have any perception of your house anymore. It’s simply too big for you to ever explore in a lifetime. This room is your world. This room has a couch. But you don’t see it as a couch anymore. It appears as huge as a mountain, an enormous, rocky monolith. The upholstery fibers are far more massive than the biggest redwood trees. You can go between these fibers as easily as the ‘regular-sized you’ walks between trees in your garden. You can’t see the world beyond – the room – from the forest of fibers. You now have the ability to move around inside things that used to look solid to you.

You are now an atom. Your house is long gone from your perception because it is so vast. You are so small that you are deep inside a single cotton fiber of your upholstered couch. One individual fiber is your universe now. Interestingly, there is still space between you and other atoms…

You are a subatomic particle now. You float freely in space, noticing slight concentrations of other subatomic particles around you. Between you there’s still… space. What is this stuff? It’s not “air” anymore because you’re small beyond the molecules that make up air. So what is this stuff between the stuff that makes up the particles that make up the air, the cotton fibers, the couch, the house… your neighbourhood, your planet, your solar system, your galaxy, your universe… ?

And you go smaller, beyond what science has discovered so far. You have become energy. Pure energy. You are a conscious, intelligent, creative energy. You are everything and everything is you. You are the creator and the created.

And then you start growing. Soon you’re back to your human size. That was fun but let’s go bigger! You are tall as the trees now. Your house looks like a child’s plaything. The cat is the size of a tiny insect. You’re still expanding…

You are the size of the planet now… and bigger. You hold the Earth in the palm of your hand, like a tiny blue/green jewel. Where is your house? Where is everything? It’s all right there… but you can’t see it because it’s so small. There is no space between anything, as far as you can perceive. The Earth looks like a marble.

You are bigger than our galaxy. You keep expanding. Billions of galaxies that seemed so very far apart are now clustered together like pearls on a necklace… what will things look like when you keep expanding? Soon the space between things seems to disappear, as they get closer and closer together – all because your perception has changed.

When you can grasp the enormity of this, you experience a spiritual awakening. It is really beyond our intellect to completely understand this, because the intellect relies on information from the physical senses. Our senses just can’t see that small – or that big.

This is how spiritual awakening happens. Whatever your personal beliefs, the best place to find this awakening is through using the imagination and going way beyond what we humans perceive. Try it today, and feel the one-ness of everything. Become awakened to your unity.
